Every morning, we drink our coffee (sometimes a bit too personalized)  enjoying  every sip of it, but really we put no thought  into how healthy coffee really is.

It turns out coffee beans are incredibly healthy fruits, and are one of the greatest source of antioxidants in the American diet. The good news is that the average American drinks about 3 cups of coffee per day. The bad news is that in order to achieve coffee’s greatest protective benefits, one needs to drink anywhere from 4-12 cups of coffee every day. In doing so, coffee can  quite possibly prevent some of the most horrific killers of our society, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, liver disease, Alzheimer’s.

How can coffee  do this? Apparently coffee contains chlorogenic acid (an incredibly powerful anti-oxidant ), which has amazing health benefits.

DIABETES: In one study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, drinking 1 cup of coffee per day lowers the risk of developing diabetes by 13%, drinking 4 cups per day lower the risk by 47%. Chlorogenic acid lowers the glucose peak associated with carbohydrate ingestion which in turn decreases insulin activity which in  turn decreases fat accumulation.

CANCER: In one study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute drinking 6 cups of coffee per day lowered the risk of developing prostate cancer by an outstanding 18%. In an issue of Breast Cancer Research, women who consumed 5 cups of coffee per day had a 57% decrease risk of developing breast cancer.  Another study showed that women who drink coffee consistently, had a 30% decreased chance of developing endometrial cancer when compared to those women who do not drink coffee. Lastly, coffee drinkers had a 30% lower incidence of colorectal cancer. Again chlorogenic acid is a compound believed and credited for these amazing results.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISESE: While, it is a common misconception that coffee can actually increase your blood pressure, it turns out that coffee’s protective compounds will actually lower blood pressure over long-term use. By lowering your  blood pressure, you decrease risk of developing cardiac disease and stroke.

LIVER DISEASE: Drinking 4 cups of coffee per day will decrease the risk of developing cirrhosis by 84%, according to a recent study published in the Annals of Epidemiology.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE:  Drinking 5 cups of coffee per day and potentially reverse Alzheimer’s as well as decreasing the risk of Parkinson’s by 47%.

OTHER:  Coffee drinkers will also experience the following benefits:

  1. Decrease the risk of developing kidney stones by 10%
  2. Increase and promote weight loss
  3. Reduced muscle aches
  4. Increased energy
  5. Prevent exercise-induced asthma
  6. Decrease risk of developing depression
  7. Prevent constipation
  8. Relieves headaches
  9. Live longer!!!!

In conclusion, no matter how you like your coffee(regular or decaf) and no matter how  personalized you choose to drink it…..the bottom line is:

Drink coffee!!!!! It’s good for you!!!!!

Till next time…Eat well, drink well and be well
